Prevalence of Spinal Metastasis in Neurosurgical Procedures: A Descriptive Study  [PDF]
Jefferson Walter Daniel, José Carlos Esteves Veiga
Open Journal of Epidemiology (OJEpi) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojepi.2016.64021
Abstract: Objective: This study sought to identify the prevalence of operations for spinal epidural neoplastic metastases relative to other spine and neurosurgical operative procedures. Methods: This study was descriptive and involved a retrospective review of data collected from patients who underwent neurosurgeries between February 1997 and January 2015 at a single quaternary hospital. The examined population was distributed across five descriptive categories to perform numerical distributions among neurosurgical operative procedures. Results: A total of 12,802 neurosurgical procedures were identified. These procedures were classified as follows: Skull and brain, 11,192 (87.42%); spinal column and spinal nervous tissue, 1462 (11.42%); and peripheral nerves, 148 (1.16%). Surgical procedures for the 1462 (100%) cases of spinal column and spinal nervous tissue diseases were distributed by nosology as follows: Degenerative intervertebral disk and spondylosis, 768 (52.54%); neoplastic, 279 (19.08%); traumatic, 221 (15.11%); congenital, 163 (11.14%); infectious and inflammatory, 27 (1.85%); and vascular, 4 (0.28%). With respect to the distribution of the 279 (100%) surgical procedures for spinal column and spinal nervous tissue neoplastic diseases, 124 (44.44%) procedures were for intradural neoplasms, and 155 (55.56%) procedures were for epidural spinal column neoplasms. The 155 (100%) operations for epidural neoplastic diseases were distributed into two groups: Primary epidural neoplasms, 42 (27.10%); and secondary epidural neoplasms, 113 (72.90%). Spinal column epidural neoplastic metastases (secondary neoplasms) represented 0.88% of the 12,802 neurosurgical procedures. Conclusions: Surgical procedures for spinal metastasis are uncommon with respect to all neurosurgical operative procedures. Trend analysis reveals an unchanging trend of prevalence for these procedures.
Apuntes para pensar la situación del movimiento obrero en el interior de la Argentina durante la primera mitad del siglo XX: El caso de la provincia de Salta
Benclowicz,José Daniel;
Ciclos en la historia, la econom?-a y la sociedad , 2012,
Abstract: ?was there a union tradition before peronism in salta? the province was not much affected by the import substitution process developed in argentina since the 1930s, and its industrialization level has always been pretty bounded in general. this fact, and the dominant representation of the provincial society as clearly conservative, has lead to a negative answer to that question. this study offers a different point of view: the data suggest that during the first half of the xxth century a labor movement was developed in salta, in which independent and left tendencies existed. those tendencies, while not dominant as in the main urban centers of the country, were influent considering the level of economic development in salta during that period. the study of the action of these sectors contributes to the knowledge of the origins of the labor movement in salta and in argentina's provinces, and this article is thought as a first step in that direction.
Entre Carl Schmitt y Thomas Hobbes: Un estudio del liberalismo moderno a partir del pensamiento de Leo Strauss
Parra,José Daniel;
Eidos , 2010,
Abstract: this essay presents a reading of modern liberalism from leo strauss' thought. starting with his analysis of carl schmitt's concept of the political and its critique of liberal "neutralization and depolitization", strauss posits an affirmation of the problem of natural right, for which it is a fundamental first step to study the political philosophy of hobbes. in contrast with schmitt and hobbes, strauss' thought points towards a consideration of classical natural right as a riposte to the political nihilism or apolitical cosmopolitanism of late-modernity, both products of radical historicism as well as methodological positivism. strauss considers the search of natural right qua representation of the idea of justice a distinct alternative to the affirmation of the will through sovereign power.
La lucha contra la privatización de YPF en Tartagal y Mosconi.: 1988-1991
Benclowicz,José Daniel;
Trabajo y sociedad , 2010,
Abstract: this paper analyzes the struggles against the privatization of ypf in tartagal and mosconi (salta province), between 1988 and 1991. those struggles were very important, and concluded in september 1991 with a popular rising, one of the first in the country against the neoliberal policies. the study of those protests indicates the existence of a combative tradition between the oil workers, where the left sectors played an important role. besides, it indicates that the support towards the privatization of ypf of the pro-government union direction in the region occurred despite an important opposition inside and outside the union.
Aportes para la Historia del Norte de Salta: Conformación y desarrollo de las localidades de Tartagal y General Mosconi durante la primera mitad del siglo XX
Benclowicz,José Daniel;
Andes , 2011,
Abstract: this work analyses the conformation and development of tartagal and general mosconi during the first half of the xxth century. tartagal emerged as a result of the expansion of the argentine border and the expropriation of land belonging to indigenous peoples. the abundance of forest and oil resources and the forced work of those peoples prompted the fast occupation and the economic growth of the area, that became the scene of bitter disputes between the standard oil company and ypf. in spite that the economic growth made tartagal and mosconi important wealth producers in the province, their social development was very limited.
Legalidad y control jurisdiccional. Construcción de garantías para lograr un "trato humano" en prisión: Reflexiones a partir de la realidad carcelaria Argentina
CESANO, José Daniel;
Boletín mexicano de derecho comparado , 2004,
Abstract: today it is known with greater scientific rigor, which are the effects that prison produces in those who suffer it. thanks to this knowledge, it is possible to design a penitentiary policy that is more realistic than those policies which seek un attainable pretensions that just transform themselves into being strategies that legitimate the present situation. in this essay, the author analyses the specific issues that characterize the regulation of the principles of legality and judicial control in argentina's penitentiary legislation, with the purpose of showing the importance of these concepts as instruments to construct a space of guarantees that assure for inmates a human treatment in prison.
De la crítica a la cárcel a la crítica de las alternativas
CESANO, José Daniel;
Boletín mexicano de derecho comparado , 2003,
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to examine the possibility of adopting criminal penalties different from prison sentences in argentina's criminal law. in this way, the author explains the origins of this trend in europe during the 1970s, as a response to the crisis of the prison system. moreover, he describes the most important proposals for finding alternative kinds of criminal sanctions, as well as the critique that they provoked. on the basis of that criticism, the author studies a new proposal that took such criticism into account. he incorporates an analysis of comparative law, taking into consideration the principle of opportunity and the existence of mediation programs. finally, he analyses the possibility if incorporating such proposal in argentina's criminal law system.
THE RHETORIC OF ACTION: A REFLECTION ON PLATO'S GORGIAS
Parra,José Daniel;
Praxis Filosófica , 2009,
Abstract: this paper will attempt to comment on the tension between politics and philosophy in the platonic dialogue gorgias. the aim is to ground this discussion through an analysis of the character of callicles who plays the role of sparring partner as it were, testing and challenging socrates' positing of philosophy as an end in itself and the best life, and not as a preparation and cultivation for the life of action. the mimetic exchange between socrates and callicles stems from their common experience as erotic men. socrates will try to elaborate his teaching upon this shared sense of longing. but callicles is reluctant. as we will see he grows impatient with socrates and at some point refuses to converse, or even listen: his motivation for an active life animates him, and for this he will need not only courage, but also phronesis, a political prudence that he aspires to learn from gorgias, his teacher.
POLITICAL PSYCHOLOGY IN PLATO'S ALCIBIADES I
Parra,José Daniel;
Praxis Filosófica , 2010,
Abstract: the following essay presents a close reading of the platonic dialogue alcibiades i. in the text, socrates is depicted as a young teacher approaching young alcibiades, a future prominent and hubristic ruler of post-periclean democratic athens. in his propadeutic task, socrates appeals to alcibiades' unlimited self-love in order to gain his confidence and attention, rousing his spirited ambition and keen intellect, trying to tempt him into becoming a philosopher. we explore the roots of alcibiades' character, his desire for primacy intermingled with his fear of failure. for motives that will be explored in this essay, the mayeutic education of alcibiades towards the life of wisdom not only failed, but also had undesired political outcomes. would a more powerful socrates have been able to procure alcibiades' ultimate allegiance? the alcibiades i sheds light on the roots and potential limitations of the study of platonic political philosophy.
La política penitenciaria durante el primer peronismo (1946 - 1955)
Cesano,José Daniel;
Revista de historia del derecho , 2010,
Abstract: this work tries to explain the penitentiary reforms during the first peronism (1946 -1955). with this intention, after realizing a description of the principal changes in this matter, we will try to demonstrate that the mentioned process was not the result of a mutation in the scientific paradigm that one was coming developing in our cultural area, from ends of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century (positivism criminologist), but it was the product of an extension of the welfare policies that the government was implementing, as part of his agenda, respect of social vulnerable se ctors.
